Times Tables Practise
It is important for all the children to recall their times tables facts quickly and accurately. If you could work on these with your child this will help them during maths sessions.
Below there are links to games and songs to help practice these with your child making it fun and memorable.
Which order should I learn the times tables with my child?
I have put the songs in the order I teach the times tables. The order I teach them is:
The should already know their 2, 5 and 10 times tables from year 3. If they dont this would be something you could work on at home with your child. It is important if you said 2x6 them would be able to tell you the answer. They dont just need to be able to say them in order by chanting or reciting them like you may have done in school. I know this was how I learnt mine when I was in primary school.
The 4 times table is a great place to then move to next, as the number rules your child will have picked up from the 2 times table will come into play. To find 4 x 3, for example, they can work out 2 x 3 and double the answer! fter this, head to the 8 times table. By building on their understanding of the 2 and 4 times tables, learning this table should be fairly simple. Next, move on to the 3 times table. This is where things can start to feel a little tricky, but fear not! Pointing out rules, such as the fact that all of the answers are odd numbers, can help.
6, 7 and 9 times tables
Once the children know and are confident with the 2,3,4,5 and 8 times tables. This means that there are only 6 facts which the children do not know.
For example, if they know 5x9=45 they also know that 9x5=45
These 6 facts are;
6 x 6 = 36
6 x 7 = 42
7 x 7 = 49
9 x 6 = 54
9 x 7 = 63
9 x 9 = 81
All the other facts from the 6 , 7 and 9 times tables will be know from flipping the times tables
e.g 6x 3 is the same as 3x6 , they already know their 3 times tables so wont been to learn this in the 6 times tables.
7x 4 is the same as 4x7, the already know the 4 times ables so wont need to learn this multiplication fact in the 7 times tables.
If your child cant see this and you want to learn the times tables in order start with the 6 times table first.
6 times table
Once your child is comfortable with multiples of 3, introduce the 6 times tables. Be sure to highlight helpful number rules as they learn these multiplications. For example, if they were to double an answer from the 3 times table, they would have an equivalent answer for the 6 times table!
